Ms. Yuri Ito developed synthetic leather from apple pomace that would have otherwise been discarded. She began doing this after seeing a large amount of fruit that was unsuitable for processing being discarded at a fruit processing factory in Shinshu where she previously worked. At an event, she learned that plant-based materials could be upcycled into leather and textiles, and she began working on making leather products using local apples. Ms. Ito says she wants to make leather made from apples a specialty product that can be used around the world. What kind of future does she envision?
